Starting an Internet Business?

Here are Some Useful Links to Get Started

Domain Names

I would first concentrate on setting up your web site before going through the expense of incorporating since the protection you get when incorporating is against other people suing. At this point you don't have customers yet.

The first thing to do is figure out what your site is about and get a domain name that reflects the content. Click this link to take advantage of this reduced rate at NameCheap.

Internet Service Provider

Now that you have your domain name you need to have it hosted somewhere. I would stay away from GoDaddy as a web hosting company since they have some serious incompatibility issues when it comes to contact forms and email in general.

I use KnownHost as my ISP. I have had several over the years and they have been the best to date. They are super fast, have a 99.9% uptime, and the tech support is great.

SSL Certificates

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. You will need this to provide a secure connection to your web site for your customer. Another great price from NameCheap. They just can't be beat!

Incorporate Your Business

Once you are ready to go live, it's time to get your business in order. I used Incorporate.com to incorporate. It was extremely easy and quick.

Accounting Software

I, along with most every small business owner I know, uses QuickBooks to manage their business finances. It is simple to use and the price is right.

Data Backup

There are two main options for backing up your data; an external hard drive or online in the cloud.

An external hard drive is convenient and you own it and it can be local or remote. For local backups you don't even need an internet connection.

Network Server Backup

I personally use the Drobo network storage device to back up multiple computers to a single, network-accessible, "Beyond RAID" server.

Cloud Backup

If you are always on the go and have your laptop with you, then I would highly recommend Dropbox as the cloud-based storage of choice. You can back up anywhere in the world with an internet connection and retrieve files just as easily.
